Gotta love this beautiful homemade ho ho cake recipe from scratch.
For those of you in a hurry, you may use your favorite chocolate cake mix and prepare according to package directions. I use my homemade cake recipe which is much better; recipe below.
1 pkg Chocolate Cake Mix (or use one of my homemade recipes below)
5 TBS flour
1-1/4 cup milk
1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup homemade unsalted butter
1 cup Crisco shortening
1 TBS pure vanilla extract
1/4 cup unsalted butter
2 to 4 TBS water (or milk)
1/4 cup chocolate baking cocoa powder
1 cup powdered sugar
Make devil's food cake according to package directions and bake in two 9" cake pans that have been greased and floured. Cool completely.
Combine flour and milk in saucepan and cook, stirring constantly, until thick. Set aside and cool completely. In a mixing bowl, add the white sugar, butter, and shortening; beating for 10-12 minutes until it is light and fluffy. Add cooled milk mixture, and mix well. Spread filling between layers and chill the cake for at least 2 hours.
Just melt the butter and add the cocoa powder and powdered sugar - whisking together. Add enough water or milk to achieve the consistency you want. Frost the cake after cooling a bit.
If you prefer use one of the following homemade chocolate cake recipes below for the Ho Ho cake instead of a mix. Just use round cake pans when baking.
