Beef Tips and Gravy over Rice

1-1/2 lbs chuck roast, sirloin tips or any beef you wish to use
1 onion, sliced

Dredge

1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/2 tsp sea salt
1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder

two cans (10-1/2 oz) beef broth
1 envelope onion soup mix
1 pkg roast beef gravy mix (optional)
1 tsp soy sauce
2 tsp cornstarch (optional)

cooked rice

Remove the fat from the roast and cut into bite-size pieces. Set aside.

Add oil to heavy skillet and while that is heating place the flour, salt, pepper, garlic and onion powder in a small bowl and whisk until mixed together; set aside.

Add the sliced onion to the hot oil and saute until light golden brown, remove and place in a bowl.  Place the meat pieces in the seasoned flour and carefully add to the pan you browned the onion in and sear until browned.  Add the onions back to the skillet.

Pour in the beef broth, onion soup mix, brown gravy mix (if using) and whisk together.  Add the soy sauce and bring to a boil.  Reduce heat and stir until you reach the consistency you are looking for.  Too watery?  Then slowly whisk in 1 tsp of cornstarch and let cook for one minute while whisking.   If that is not enough use the other teaspoon or cornstarch.  Continue cooking for a couple minutes until thick and serve over cooked rice.

Recipe Notes

You may also make this in the slow cooker.  Turn on to high heat setting.  Place the browned onions in the slow cooker and when the meat is brown add that.  Next whisk the beef broth, onion soup mix, gravy mix and soy sauce together and add to the crock pot.  Cook for 4 hours or on low cook for 6 hours.
