I love this Southern fried cabbage. Using ham or bacon takes this buttery comfort food dish over the top. So good and so easy to make.
Southern Fried Cabbage Recipe
COUNTRY FRIED CABBAGE RECIPE
1/2 head cabbage (or more if needed)
small onion, chopped
1 cup sliced ham or 6 slices of bacon*
1/8 tsp sugar
salt and pepper to taste
Tear off the dirty damaged leaves and rinse the head of cabbage – dry well. Cut in half and place the cabbage cut side down – begin slicing off narrow strips until you have the amount you want to cook for this recipe.
When you are using ham, slice into pieces, or with bacon use a kitchen scissors to cut into bite-size pieces. Cook the ham or bacon with the onion together in the skillet. You will need a couple tablespoons of butter or oil with the ham and onion. Next add the cabbage and fry until tender, approximately 15 minutes.
Instead of adding ham to the cabbage serve this fried cabbage with ham.
Recipe Notes
You may also use any of the following:
- cooked hamburger
- kielbasa
- sliced mushrooms
- small can of diced tomatoes
- serve with balsamic vinegar
This recipe is also great with fried bacon or sliced and sauteed kielbasa slices on top.
