Homemade Silly Putty

After you make homemade silly putty, you won’t buy it from the store again. I have homemade recipes for play-dough, paper mache and more.

Great birthday party activities and won’t cost an arm and a leg – and they will love it.

Homemade Silly Putty Recipe

Homemade Silly Putty

No substitutions for this easy silly putty recipe. It turns out perfect every time.

RECIPE FOR SILLY PUTTY

1/2 cup Elmer’s glue
1/2 cup liquid starch
3 drops food coloring

Place white glue in a medium shallow dish. Slowly add liquid starch to glue, kneading with your fingers. The more you handle the silly putty, the better it will turn out.

If desired, add drops of food coloring, any color you want and continue to knead with hands (I wear rubber gloves so my hands do not get stained, until color is fully incorporated). Makes about 1 cup.

HOMEMADE PLAY-DOUGH RECIPE

1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tsp cream of tartar
1 TBS vegetable oil
1 cup water
few drops of food coloring
few drops of peppermint oil, optional

In a heavy pan, mix dry ingredients. Add oil, water and food coloring. Cook for 3 minutes or until mixture pulls away from the side of the pan.

Stir in a few drops of peppermint oil (or any kind of oil for a pleasant smell). Working quickly, place the mixture onto a sheet of waxed paper and knead slightly. Will keep for several weeks in an air tight container.

This is NOT edible.

PAPER MACHE:

To make it, combine 1/2 cup all-purpose flour and 2 cups cold water in a bowl. Add this mixture to a saucepan of 2 cups boiling water and bring it to a boil again. Remove from the heat and stir in 3 tablespoons of sugar. Let it cool; it will thicken as it cools. Once it does, it’s ready to use.
